Dystopia

Dystopia is a cyberpunk style game that was built in the Source engine way back when you still had to add mods manually! Over the years it’s gone through multiple iterations of Valve trickery in trying to break it. Yet we still continue to live on with a fairly active community and a team even working on a spiritual sequel on the Unreal Engine. Dystopia was a huge part of my teenage years when I found out about it after it’s first demo release. I was immediately captured by the amazing style of game play, the graphics, and the community around it. Sure, the graphics are a little dated now but the game is over 10 years old! Over the years, the community has moved away for the most part but a good set of people continue to return to the game for casual play. They are very active in the Puny Human Discord so feel free to hop in there to find a group of people who may be willing to teach you the ropes!

Community Maps and FastDL

I’m proud to host a specialized server for Dystopia! My server gives the community a chance to play community maps that were built back in the day. Over the years I’ve built up a vast collection of custom maps and hosted the highest traffic FastDL server for the game. Seriously, some months I hit multiple Terabytes worth of transfer from FastDL alone. If you’re not aware of how the Source Engine works in this regard it can be messy. Any server can host custom maps and content by simply uploading it into the game server, then when a client connects they will receive a list of files that they need to download. By default, the server will push this content out to the client as they need it. However, with the age of the Source Engine, not a lot of people had the high speed connections you see today. The servers were in the same boat, content would be pushed out very slowly from the server to keep performance up to par for people playing the game. Valve built in a FastDL system which allows the server operator to host files at a web address which will download at the full rate of the web server. You can see why this might be useful, it moves the load off of a performance heavy system off to the web!

Now, here’s where the length of this post begins. There are a ton of maps available to be played, all are hosted on the server and FastDL. If you ever encounter an issue with a file reported as missing please shout out to me to let me know. You can callvote any of these maps using the in game Console (Default is ~) using the following:
